Over the weekend we had 3 new releases – The Jungle Book, Barbershop: The Next Cut, and Criminal. These all did moderately well, and The Jungle Book in particular exceeded expectations.
David has to be very happy with The Jungle Book‘s initial haul of $103.2 million. I suspect that this movie will have some legs, as I mentioned in the last post, and if things go well, could surpass some of the big budget comic book movies in the draft, making it an excellent deal at $30. Barbershop: The Next Cut made $20.2 million opening weekend, which is not bad given the $9 Michelle paid for it. This is a movie we will have to keep an eye on, as I am not sure how much longevity it will have. Meanwhile, Criminal, for which Violet paid $7, had a relatively small opening at $5.7 million.
As for older movies, Batman v Superman continues to lose steam, only making about $9 million in its 4th weekend. The Boss beat it out once again, making almost $10 million. My Big, Fat Greek Wedding 2 is not doing the epic run the first one did, but it is still making a respectable $3.2 million.
Here are the top 10 movies this week:
- The Jungle Book – $103.2 M
- Barbershop: The Next Cut – $20.2 M
- The Boss – $9.9 M
- Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice – $9 M
- Zootopia – $8.1 M
- Criminal – $5.7 M
- My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 – $3.2 M
- Miracles from Heaven – $1.9 M
- God’s Not Dead 2 – $1.7 M
- Eye in the Sky – $1.5 M
As for the upcoming week, we only have a couple movies coming out. The Huntsman: Winter’s War releases, which finally gets Jamie into the game. This is a big mystery as to how well it will do. The first Show White and the Huntsman made a respectable $155 million, but critics seemed to give it a mediocre 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. Stars like Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt and Chris Hemsworth could bring in the crowds though, we will have to wait and see. The other release is A Hologram for the King, which Violet was able to snag for an easy $1. This stars Tom Hanks, which is probably the only selling point for the movie. But given the cheap price that Violet paid, it could pay off in the end.
